Recently Tasted Bubblies:

I confess, I’m one of those wine drinkers who can drink bubbly anytime, with anything. And there are so many quality sparkling wines out there now it is reasonable to consider some cavas and proseccos for house wines–something you can open anytime–without feeling a pinch.

Torresella Prosecco Extra Dry is a classy and classic bubbly from Venezia, in northern Italy–ground zero for Italy’s best prosecco. Don’t let the “Extra Dry” fool you–it’s less dry than “Dry”. Wonderful on it’s own or in a mimosa or Belini. $16

Mumm. Where to start? The French side of Mumm is wonderful on the palate but hard on the pocket. Mumm California is a delicious blend of quality and value. Mumm has several CA labels but their Brut Prestige is such deal if you like classic Champagne style without the upcharge. For about $20 you get a sparkling wine consistently rated 90pts. Creamy, citrusy, complex, and crisp.

Balletto Sparkling Rose is a champ. In a world with lots of ordinary sparkling rose, Balletto shines with aroma and flavor. No whimpy rose here. 70% pinot noir and 30% chardonnay, it comes across with flavors of strawberry and water carried on brisk acidity. Balletto Sparkling Rose is made in limited quantities, so if you can’t find the rose, check out some of their other quality wines–it’s a family owned and operated winery.
